Part 2: "It's none of my business, but why don’t you just buy a new one?

The Sofa Bed
Osama is staying temporarily in Kiel for his study. For his room he wanted to have a chill sofa that can also be used as a bed for visitors. There are a number of Sofa Beds available in the market, but yet their prices are quite high and after using them for a couple of years for the study time they can only be sold for a much cheaper price. Not only that, but the idea of buying a new product means using more resources to build this product. Instead we decided to find other ways to build a sofa bed from upcycled materials.
We thought of using Pallets for the base of the bed, but they are either expensive if you buy them, or not easy to find and transport if you find them on the street, and usually those need a lot of finishing work. Yet the idea to use a beer crate sounded more appealing. These crates were smaller, easier to transport, and easier to get from any supermarket for a small price that you can get back once you get them back.
Here are the steps we followed for having our sofa bed:
We used 8 crates to make the base. We placed them as shown in the photo to cover the area of a single bed mattress (95X190 cm).
We used an old Lattenrost (Bed Base) that we found as shown on the picture. We tied the wooden pieces with a rope to the crates to fix them in place.
We used two old bed mattresses, one for the back and one for the seat.
The final result was quite nice and comfortable.
